The ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme aims to provide better cycling infrastructure. We are building safe bicycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. They will enable you to cycle quickly and smoothly along and across the Ring. This is how we plan to offer road users a worthy alternative to the car and to gradually reduce the number of cars on the Ring. The construction of the F23 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.
Cycling along the canal in Vilvoorde
In the future, Canal Route North (F23) will connect Boom and Brussels. The section we are building within the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme runs along the N260 (Brusselsesteenweg — Westvaartdijk) and will connect the Verbrande Brug in Grimbergen via Vilvoorde to the Brussels Capital Region.
- Other cycling routes branch off at various places.
- There are bus stops along the route and transfers to the Ringtram bus will also be possible.
- We will be separating cyclists from the hazardous truck traffic by constructing two bicycle tunnels and a bicycle channel.
- The planting of hedges, trees and grasses in the areas around the bicycle highway will provide a pleasant cycling experience.

Phase 1 – Phase 2 – Phase 3
Brusselsesteenweg from Lenterik to the industrial zone (completed)
The renewed Chaussée de Bruxelles/Vaartdijk opened to traffic in early November 2021. The bicycle highway along the canal now separates cyclists and motorised traffic.
-
Phase 4 — Phase 5 — Phase 5b
We have been working on the Westvaartdijk since October 2021. We are installing separated sewers, renewing the roadway and constructing more of the bicycle highway.
The works will be progressing from north to south. We are working in several phases to ensure the accessibility of the industrial zone.
Phase 4
Westvaartdijk between Verbrande Brug and the Industrieweg (completed)
The first sub-phase (Phase 4), which saw the renewal of the Westvaartdijk and Industrieweg junction, is now complete.
Phase 5
Westvaartdijk between the Industrieweg and the Fabrieksweg (in progress until end 2022)
We will be working next to the industrial zone until the end of this year. Construction on the Westvaartdijk between the Industrieweg and the Fabrieksweg is ongoing. The necessary mitigation measures are being taken so that businesses can remain accessible.
Phase 5b
Reconstruction of the Westvaartdijk and Fabrieksweg junction (March 17th - June 2022)
The intersection with the Fabrieksweg will be renewed from from March 17 to mid-June 2022.. Traffic will be able to pass through the works via a diversion: as there is a loop around the industrial estate, you will still be able to reach your destination.
-
Phase 6
Westvaartdijk between the Fabrieksweg and the Verbindingsweg (august 2022 — the end of 2022)
From august the last part of the bicycle highway will take shape. It will connect the industrial zone and Borght. These works will be completed by the end of the year.
Cyclists
Cyclists between the viaduct and the Verbrande Brug will continue to use the cycle path that runs from the Verbindingsweg behind the industrial zone to the Humbeeksesteenweg. You can rejoin the F23 in the direction of Boom via the Verbrande Brugsesteenweg.
Motorised traffic
Between the viaduct and Borgt, you can already cycle comfortably and safely along the canal on the F23 Canal Route North cycle highway. The bicycle highway is not yet available in the Grimbergen area, as we are still laying sewers and a new roadway.
From Tuesday, 14 June onwards, traffic on a section of the Westvaartdijk will pass the work site in alternating directions. The contractor will install temporary traffic lights. This situation will continue until November this year.
